Participants will increase their awareness of those things that influence grief after a traumatic loss and identify ways to build resilience in bereaved students and their parents, and themselves.

At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize determinants that influence the grief process after a traumatic death
  2. Identify how contemporary mourning theories promote mental health after a traumatic death
  3. Create a Palette of Grief® to identify clinician’s grief reactions and how to use the tool with students
  4. Discuss eight pathways of self-care to counter compassion fatigue and enhance resilience

NOTE:  The first 30 people to register at each site will receive a free copy of Barbara Rubel’s book, “But I Didn’t Get to Say Goodbye: Helping children and families after a suicide.”

About the Speaker:
Barbara Rubel, MA, BCETS, DAAETS, is a nationally recognized speaker on traumatic death and building resilience. Barbara is the author of, “But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: Helping children and families after a suicide” and the 30-hour continuing education course book for Nurses, “Death, Dying, and Bereavement: Providing compassion during a time of need.” She is the co-author of the Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime Training Curriculum, “Compassion Fatigue.

Barbara, a Certified Bereavement Specialist and Board-Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress, was featured in the Emmy award winning Documentary, “Fatal Mistakes.” She received a BS in Psychology and MA in Community Health with a concentration in Thanatology from Brooklyn College.

Participant Cancellation Policy: You must contact CESA #4 to cancel attendance one week prior to the scheduled event, unless otherwise stated in the event details. CESA #4 will only provide full refund of registration fees depending on individual circumstances. Refunds depend upon the ability of CESA #4 to cancel any financial obligations created by the registration such as meals, materials, etc. CESA #4 reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by e-mail or phone if a workshop is cancelled. If a participant is a 'no show' the school will be billed for the registration fee, or loss of the 'free' attendance slot.

Weather Conditions: If a workshop has been cancelled due to weather conditions, every effort will be made to reschedule the workshop. If weather conditions are questionable, please call CESA #4 Voice Mail at (608) 786-4800; Toll Free (800) 514-3075. A message will be posted regarding workshop weather cancellations.

Dietary Restrictions: CESA #4 will make every attempt to accommodate dietary restrictrions as noted in a user's MyQuickReg profile; however, we encourage anyone with a dietary restriction or preference to bring food items in case the event menu cannot fully accommodate. Other Helpful Hints: Room temperatures vary from one workshop location to another, so bring a jacket or sweater for maximum comfort.
