Most schools in the United States today operate by white middle class values, The students from poverty and diverse backgrounds often find it difficult to be successful in educational environments.

This workshop examines factors that impact academic achievement for students from low socio-economic and diverse environments.

Sessions topics to include
· culturally relevant strategies
· instructional resources
· economic issues impacting all groups of students
· using appropriate terminologies
· providing equitable school and classroom climates
· avoiding group stereotyping
· mental health
· trauma
· abuse/neglect

This workshop will focus attention on those conditions that create opportunities or resources for students. Educators, with a better understanding of poverty, race and other factors that interfere with learning, will be capable of recognizing and accessing resources they might not have been aware of previously.

This workshop will include three days of intense “in classroom” presentation, discussion, speakers and group work, as well as a fourth day of field trips to expose participants to resources that are available within the community.
