Exploring Expository Literacy:
Increasing Academic Rigor through Critical Reading and Written Responses for Grades 7-10

In this workshop, participants will receive a packet of materials that can be used in the classroom and explore specific strategies to develop critical reading and written response to expository text including:
• differentiating between narrative and expository text features/structures
• understanding expository text features and structures and their role in comprehension and author’s purpose
• using structured note-taking to distinguish among central ideas, main ideas and supporting details
• utilizing close reading scaffolds to annotate expository text
• differentiating between paraphrasing and summarizing and using explicit instruction techniques to teach both
• using the “Great Short Answer” organizational scaffold to guide short answer, text dependent written responses
• exploring rubrics for assessing text annotations and short answer responses

Workshop Objectives:
Improve teaching instruction and increase expectations for student performance in academic literacy as recommended by Common Core Standards for ELA, including History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects.

Audience: Seventh through tenth grade educators, including social studies, science, allied and encore teachers
Cost: $75.00 per participant for Curriculum Instruction and Assessment member school districts. $150.00 per participant for all other school districts.

 

CANCELLATION POLICY: Any registration cancellation must be received 7 days prior to the scheduled date to receive a refund or avoid invoicing. CESA 8 will only provide full refund of registration fees depending on individual circumstances. Refunds depend upon the ability of CESA 8 to cancel any financial obligations created by the registration such as meals, materials, etc. Registered participants not in attendance on the day of the session will be charged the full registration fee. CESA 8 reserves the right to cancel any session due to insufficient enrollment or inclement weather. Participants will be notified via email through myQuickReg.com if a cancellation occurs.
