Brain Based Vocabulary Instruction:
Teaching Critical Vocabulary for Grades 4-12
April 30, 2014 - 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM
CESA 8 Office - Aspen/Birch Rooms
Teaching vocabulary is a key component of the Common Core State Standards. Helping our students “own” the vocabulary is critical to their achievement on assessments and their success in career and college. Education and memory research reveal several vocabulary exercises that help students retain vocabulary.
In this workshop, participants will receive a packet of materials that can be used in the classroom and learn how to identify vocabulary for explicit instruction and explore specific research supported vocabulary activities to help students build their listening, speaking, reading and writing vocabularies, including:
• Current research on vocabulary instruction involving tier two words, indirect and direct instruction, multiple exposures, structural analysis, context clues, and using resources
• Strategies such as semantic and mind mapping, word art, right/left brain definitions, context mapping, synonym circles, vocabulary tableau, vocabulary links, Wordle walls, shades of meaning chains, grammar connection
• Technology enhancements
Workshop Objectives:
• Improve vocabulary instruction and increase expectations for student performance in academic literacy as recommended by Common Core Standards for ELA, including History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects.
• Provide explicit instructional strategies and scaffolds to specifically address the needs of struggling students
Presenter: Darla Brink, Director of CESA 8 Literacy Center
Audience: Forth through tenth grade teachers, including social studies, science, allied and encore teachers, Title I teachers, special education teachers.
Cost: $45.00 per participant for CESA 8 Title I School Districts.
