Creating Quality Written Responses:
Responding to Narrative, Expository and Persuasive Text for Grades 5-10
April 9, 2014 - 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
CESA 8 Office - Aspen/Birch Rooms
The 21st century learner must be able to think critically about text and create quality written responses to text dependent questions from all modes of writing. Next year, the Smarter Balanced Assessment will assess our students’ abilities to construct written responses using specific evidence from text through both listening and text comprehension.
In this workshop, participants will receive a packet of materials that can be used in the classroom and explore specific strategies to develop written responses to narrative, expository and persuasive text including:
• learning organizational scaffolds for teaching to students to create quality written responses
• exploring a variety of short texts and text dependent questions to understand how to support our students in understanding the academic language used in the questions
• using close reading techniques to locate evidence in text to support responses
• utilizing summarizing strategies for varying text structures
Workshop Objectives:
• Improve writing instruction and increase expectations for student performance in academic literacy as recommended by Common Core Standards for ELA, including History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects
• Provide explicit instructional strategies and scaffolds to specifically address the needs of struggling writers
