Exploring Expository Literacy:
Close and Critical Reading Strategies for Grades 4-7

In this workshop, participants will receive a packet of materials that can be used in the classroom and explore specific strategies to develop critical reading skills in reading expository text, including:
• exploring elements of expository text
• differentiating between narrative and expository text features/structures
• understanding expository text features and structures and their role in comprehension and author’s purpose
• creating main idea statements and determining relevant supporting details
• learning a three step close reading process
• exploring a variety of summarizing scaffolds

Workshop Objectives:
• Improve teaching instruction and increase expectations for student performance in academic literacy as recommended by Common Core Standards for ELA.
• Provide explicit instructional strategies and scaffolds to specifically address the needs of struggling readers

Presenter: Darla Brink, Director of CESA 8 Literacy Center
Audience: Fourth through seventh grade teachers, Title I teachers, interventionists, reading specialists, special education teachers.
Cost: $45.00 per participant for CESA 8 Title I School Districts.

 

CANCELLATION POLICY: Any registration cancellation must be received 7 days prior to the scheduled date to receive a refund or avoid invoicing. CESA 8 will only provide full refund of registration fees depending on individual circumstances. Refunds depend upon the ability of CESA 8 to cancel any financial obligations created by the registration such as meals, materials, etc. Registered participants not in attendance on the day of the session will be charged the full registration fee.
