What is the Add+VantageMR Professional Development Program?
The Add+VantageMR professional development program includes two courses of instructional training that support K-5 mathematics assessment and teaching. It is unique because it has been designed to meet the specific needs of the classroom teacher. The foundation of this program, the Learning Framework In Number (LFIN), provides participants with an understanding of how children learn mathematics. AVMR helps teachers assess their students accurately and custom-fit their instruction to enable students to progress in the area of mathematics.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will learn how to assess students based on the Learning Framework in Number.
2. Participants will explore ways to provide intervention to students based on data collected.
How Does It Work?
There are two courses in AVMR Professional Development training. As part of the course, participants receive the text Teaching Number in the Classroom for 4-8 year olds, course handbooks, and various teaching materials. Both courses allow teachers to gain insight and the ability to assess where children are on the continuum of learning in relationship to the Learning Framework In Number.
Course 1 takes place as a 4-day workshop with the development of local collegial teams to support on-going study. The coursework covered includes:
- Number Words & Numerals
- Structuring Number
- Addition & Subtraction
- Add+VantageMR Assessments for each of the above topics
- Classroom Instructional Framework for Early Number
Course 2 builds upon the work done in Course 1. It is presented as a 4-day workshop and provides valuable insight about why so many children have difficulty with place value, multiplication and division. It focuses specifically on:
- Multiplication & Division
- Place value
- Add+VantageMR Assessments for each of the above topics
- Classroom Instructional Framework for Early Number
After completing both courses, teachers are able to confidently administer all five assessments and determine a student profile to guide day-to-day instruction for each student in such a way that the teacher has a clear picture of the student’s current understanding and the next step he or she needs to take.
Who Should Take Add+VantageMR Training?
This professional development training is beneficial for anyone working in the area of mathematics, or supervising others who teach mathematics. Teachers with at least one year of experience who are working with kindergarten through fifth-grade children are encouraged to take Add+VantageMR Professional Development courses. It is also beneficial for teachers at the sixth-grade level who have students who have fallen at least two years behind.
