What:
Thinking Maps®, developed by Dr. David Hyerle, are visual teaching tools that foster and encourage lifelong learning. They're based on a simple insight: The one common instructional thread that binds together all teachers, from pre-kindergarten through postgraduate, is that they all teach the same thought processes.

How:
Each of the eight Thinking Maps® is based on a fundamental cognitive skill such as comparing and contrasting,
sequencing, classifying, and cause-effect reasoning.

  • Multiple Thinking Maps® are used as an eight maps icon toolkit by students for constructing knowledge: for improving the basics of reading, writing, and mathematics as well as for problem-solving and the development of higher-order thinking abilities.

Why:

  • If every teacher within a school utilized consistent visual tools across all grade levels and content disciplines students could learn more effectively and more efficiently.
  • Objectives could be covered in less time with greater retention.
  • Cause and effect reasoning in one class would be represented in a similar manner throughout the curricula, as would every other thought process!
  • This common visual language would become such a familiar part of students' education that it would remain an effective learning tool throughout their academic careers - and beyond.
  • A wealth of research and published articles supports the use of different types of Visual Tools generally, and Thinking Maps® specifically. New brain research provides even greater insights into why most students perform better when using  hinking Maps®.

Audience:
Must attend as Teams. Content area does not matter. Choices: begin at the elementary level, expand to middle school level and then to high school or organize teams with representation from each level.
