Young children are amazing math thinkers! The activities presented in this session will be connected to the Common Core State Standards for Kindergarten and Focal Points in Mathematics (NCTM and NAEYC) for Prekindergartens. Video clips of classroom settings, children's work samples, and a variety of child assessments will be shared and discussed.

Dr. Copley has written and edited four books that specifically deal with young children and mathematics, all four are jointly published by NAEYC and NCTM. She has worked as a consultant for Curious George, National Head Start, and more than 50 school districts. Most importantly, she normally spends one day a week teaching children and/or advising teachers of young children in public, high-need schools.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Participants in the session will explore the CCSS and Focal Points for the young learner.
  2. Participants in this session will explore instructional strategies for supporting the CCSS and the Focal Points in their classrooms.
  3. Participants in this session will explore classroom settings, children's work samples, and a variety of child assessments to support the young learner.
