Math Strategies for Struggling Learners
Grades 1-6

Greg Tang's NEW workshop for grade 1-6 teachers focuses on the problems many of our students and especially our struggling learners share: counting on their fingers, trouble with regrouping, difficulty memorizing basic facts and especially their times tables, little number sense or understanding of algorithms, and almost everything related to fractions and word problems.

In two extraordinary days, Greg will share firsthand the strategies, tools and activities he's created to help students master the critical skills they need to meet tough, new Common Core, State and Provincial math standards. You'll leave with:

1. An amazingly effective way to teach students to regroup when adding and subtracting that is the key to solving measurement, money and elapsed time problems too.

2. A systematic approach for teaching multiplication and division including basic facts, the distributive property, partial products and quotients, the standard multiplication algorithm, and Greg's incredibly effective twist on long division.

3. A model for teaching and connecting whole numbers and fractions that makes identifying, comparing, simplifying and computing fractions easy - especially for struggling learners.

4. Part-Whole and Singapore Model Drawing strategies that teach visualization skills, lay the foundation for algebraic equations, and improve reading skills - all at the same time!

What You Will Learn:
• Move students quickly from thinking visually and concretely to thinking abstractly, efficiently and most importantly, algebraically.
• Connect whole numbers and fractions in a way that develops true understanding and makes computations fast, easy and intuitive.
• Use visual models to organize information, solve multi-step word problems, and transition students to algebraic equations.
• Provide more intuitive explanations as a result of your own deeper understanding of key mathematical concepts, strategies and standards.

A little about Greg Tang:
