This book study will look at literacy instruction at the 4K level. We will be discussing the book "Literacy Beginnings: A preliteracy handbook" by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell. Each participant is responsible for purchasing their own book and reading chapters 1 - 9 prior to the first evening. (They are short chapters with lots of charts.) The first 20 registered participants will receive a free book.

One graduate credit will be available through St. Mary's university for $130. We will discuss registering for credit on the first evening.

This bookstudy will be held via distance learning. Those schools without that capability are welcome to attend at CESA 10 in Chippewa Falls.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will evaluate the characteristics in the materials read to the students, gaps and how to overcome them.
  • Participants will review early writing behaviors and will reflect on the writer’s workshop model within their classroom.
  • Participants will critically review the Continuum for Literacy Learning for 4k to identify areas for improvement in literacy instruction.
