Wisconsin Fast Plants are a tried-and-true way to teach complex ecological principles to students of all ages through hands-on and minds-on science investigations. Growing under fluorescent lights in a small amount of space, Wisconsin Fast Plants are used by educators and researchers around the world, and in this one-day session you'll receive a complimentary set of all materials needed for growing Fast Plants with your students along with lessons and investigations for teaching about matter and energy--key concepts in the Next Generation Science Standards.

The science inquiry approaches we will use involve students in developing scientific explanations from evidence gathered through a combination of hands-on experimentation and text-based research that supports the Common Core mathematics and ELA Standards and opens the door for culturally-relevant learning about our relationships with plants and foods.
• You will learn how to plant and grow Wisconsin Fast Plants with your students and receive all the materials you need to go back to your class and have students conduct an investigation with Fast Plants that will be flowering and producing seed before the end of the school year! Fast Plants grow from seed to flowering plant in about 14 days.
• Using Fast Plants, we will explore a variety of experimental and research-based investigations that work well in classrooms for teaching the basics of photosynthesis and the carbon cycle as they are described in the Next Generation Standards.
• We will discuss what research is telling us about how students typically learn cause and effect relationships in science and common misconceptions related to ecosystems.

Facilitator: Hedi Baxter Lauffer, the director of the Wisconsin Fast Plants Program at UW-Madison, will facilitate the workshop. She was a classroom science teacher, Hartford School District Teacher of the Year, and earned National Board Certification before becoming a nationally published curriculum developer and professional development facilitator.

$20.00 for any participant from a CESA 8 School District
