Reading Technologies Workshop

Workshop Description:

This workshop is designed to educate professional staff about accessible instructional materials for reading.

Participants will:

• Understand and define terms pertaining to IDEA 2004 legal mandates for Accessible Instructional Materials

• Investigate research that impacts students who struggle with the reading process

• Receive resources and training for acquisition and implementation of specialized formats and
alternative formats

• Explore the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Center (NIMAC)

• Examine factors to consider that affect the student, their environment and tasks when contemplating assistive technologies and strategies

• Examine a continuum of tools that can support struggling readers

• Gain a knowledge base sufficient to share information with curriculum, special education and
technology staff.

Participants will be given time to experience many of the technologies demonstrated.

Please note: This is not a training in reading instruction

Presenter: Cindy Nankee OTR/L, ATP is a school based Occupational Therapist and a certified Assistive Technology Professional. Cindy has worked nine years with the WATI (Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative) and in 2009 established UTLL (Universal Technology
for Learning & Living) to provide professional development, technical assistance, assessment and implementation of technology to educators, consumers and families.

Audience: Early childhood providers, K-12 special education teachers, K-12 regular education teachers, ELL teachers, Title 1 teachers and paraprofessionals

Participant Cancellation Policy: You must contact CESA #3 at least one week prior to the scheduled event to cancel and receive a full refund of your registration fee. Cancellations not received at least one week prior to the registered event will be charged the full registration fee. CESA #3 reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by e-mail or phone if a workshop is cancelled. If a participant is a 'no show' the school will be billed for the registration fee, or loss of the 'free' attendance slot. Accommodations: If you need an accommodation to participate including interpreter services (sign language or other spoken language) please email the workshop contact to set up these services. A two-week notice is appreciated. CESA #3 is handicapped accessible.
