"Evaluators Using the Framework for Teaching"   by Charlotte Danielson

Presented by James Edler and Teresa Lien

The Danielson Group seeks to advance the understanding and application of Charlotte Danielson’s concepts in the educational community, connect them to other areas of knowledge and enhance professional practices of educators so as to positively impact student learning.

Charlotte Danielson’s 2011 Framework for Teaching© has been adopted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for evaluating teachers. The Framework for Teaching is a research-based model for assessing and supporting teaching practice, used as the foundation of a school or district’s mentoring, coaching, professional development, and teacher evaluation process, thus linking all those activities together and helping teachers become more thoughtful practitioners.

Day 1:  The Framework for Teaching

The Framework for Teaching provides the essential foundational criteria on which to build a reliable and valid system of teacher evaluation. In this training, participants will learn how to effectively use the research-based framework. Build a critical awareness of the architecture and vocabulary of The Framework so that the process of teacher evaluations is effective.

 Day 2:  Observation Skills

Participants will learn how to collect evidence that is non-judgmental by understanding the issues of bias and other common factors. Observation Skills will train observers on collecting low-inference evidence, interpretation of evidence against the levels of performance and sharpen methods of collecting, sorting and aligning evidence.

 Day 3:  Calibrating Observations

Calibration is crucial. In this training, observers will coordinate the observation process and calibrate their findings under the direction of the Danielson trainer, who conducts calibration exercises with sets of observers across the country. Day 3 is a linchpin for inner-rater and inter-rater reliability after Day 1 and Day 2 trainings.
