Lexiling and Text Complexity: What is so complex?

With 2014 quickly approaching, we need to prepare our students for Wisconsin’s new state summative assessment. Now is the time to align and select resources to implement changes in instruction to implement the Common Core State Standards. “One of the key requirements of the CCSS for reading is that all students must be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they progress through school. By the time they complete the core, students must be able to read and comprehend independently and proficiently the kinds of complex texts commonly found in college and careers” (Appendix A of CCSS, pg. 2). Why does text complexity matter? What factors influence text complexity? How is text complexity measured? What resources exist to support educators’ understanding, evaluation, and selection of increasingly complex texts? What supports are necessary for students to read increasingly complex texts? This workshop will better prepare you to properly address the issue of text complexity.

Presenter:

Tamara Maxwell began her career as a high school English teacher at Kimberly High School in Wisconsin. As a classroom teacher, she saw students struggle with complex texts and wanted to learn how to help them, which led her to earn a Masters degree in reading with reading teacher and specialist licenses. Seeing a need to support struggling learners, Tamara created and co-taught integrated English classes, designed to motivate students to be literate and use literacy to learn. Tamara also used her classroom as a class lab where she coached content area teachers in instructional practices and literacy support tools and strategies. Tamara has consulted with school districts, state agencies, and national consortiums on the Common Core State Standards, text types and complexity, grammar instruction, co-teaching, disciplinary literacy, and teaching with technology. Tamara now works as the English Language Arts and literacy education consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
