Course Description:

There are ever increasing number of student who are being diagnosed with mental health issues. It has been estimated that there is approximately 10% of the student population meet the criteria for the diagnosis of depression and 17% with generalized anxiety disorder. It is common for students with these disorders to experience academic and behavioral struggles each day. Participants will learn about the diagnostic characteristics of depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety and Pervasive Development Disorders. Classroom interventions will be offered to assist students both academically and behaviorally so that they can be successful both in and out of school. This course is designed for teachers and administrators.

Course Objectives:

  1. Learn the diagnostic characteristics of depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety and Pervasive Development Disorders: Participants will learn characteristics of various types of mental health disorders in children and adolescents.
  2. Learn methods for behavioral management: Participants will learn and apply behavioral management methods to assist classroom teachers in structuring the learning environment so that all students have an opportunity to learn.
  3. Know the therapy methods and medications used for the treatment of depression: Participants will know and be able to explain the therapy methods and medications that are commonly used to in treatment.
  4. Demonstrate strategies for assisting students academically: Participants will be able to design strategies to improve the academic performances of their students.
  5. Utilize methods for developing and maintaining relationships with students: Participants will be able to explain and demonstrate methods for building relationships necessary for motivating students who are struggle academically and behaviorally.

This workshop will be presented by Paul Gasser. Paul is a Marriage and Family Therapist for St. Joseph’s Healthcare-Gundersen/Lutheran, as well as an instructor for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. His experience with children and their families comes as a result of working for over 30 years as a therapist and educator both in the United States and Russia. Paul is also a former principal and classroom teacher. Paul’s workshops are lighthearted and filled with practical ideas to use with your students. His information, ideas, and strategies will help you to immediately feel more in control in your classroom.

Participant Cancellation Policy: You must contact CESA 4 to cancel attendance one week prior to the scheduled event unless otherwise stated in the individual event details. CESA 4 will only provide full refund of registration fees depending on individual circumstances. Refunds depend upon the ability of CESA 4 to cancel any financial obligations created by the registration such as meals, materials, etc. CESA 4 reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by e-mail or phone if a workshop is cancelled. If a participant is a 'no show' the school will be billed for the registration fee, or loss of the 'free' attendance slot.
