The second draft of the Next Generation Science Standards is out! You can go to http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards for the details. In this workshop we’ll be digging into these standards in depth to understand the approach to science in the NGSS and collaboratively look at what it means for our curriculum and instruction. Here is a general outline of the day:

I. Introduction - go over what has changed in this draft of the standards and review the basic format of the standards.
II. Review the appendices provided in the standards – particularly look at the course sequence suggestions, college and career readiness connections, progressions and equity sections.
II. Example
 - As a group we will go through a sample science lesson from some common materials. I’ll guide a discussion of the connections between this lesson and the different parts of the NGSS, considering what is there and how it could be revised.
III. Group work through – in grade level groups we will look at a sample science lesson at that level and discuss how to revise/reconsider the lesson to align with the approach of the NGSS.
IV. Work time - we'll have some structured time, with specific outcomes, to look at our own curriculum and discuss it in groups in relation to the NGSS.
V. Next steps – we’ll discuss what we need as science teachers to support the implementation of these standards. If available, we’ll discuss some new resources being developed at DPI and through the CESA network to help in this process.

Cost: $50/person - includes lunch
