DESCRIPTION:
This workshop will provide participants with the necessary foundation or knowledge base for being able to effectively program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, utilizing “best practices” from structured teaching. Numerous highly effective, innovative, and practical strategies that can be used immediately to meet the educational programming needs of students with ASD will be shown, as well as ways to engineer the physical environment to provide the visual structure needed by students with ASD to increase their comprehension, understanding and independent functioning. Most importantly, utilizing these instructional strategies addresses challenging behaviors in a proactive manner by reducing the stress, anxiety, and frustration that may be experienced by students with ASD due to feeling confused or overwhelmed at school.
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Students will:
• Develop an understanding of the unique learning and processing styles of student’s with autism spectrum disorder.
• Learn how to use and implement numerous visual support strategies to teach various skills and increase independent functioning for students with autism spectrum disorder.
• Learn how to engineer the physical environment by providing visual structure to increase comprehension and understanding of students with autism spectrum disorder.
• Develop an understanding of why challenging behaviors occur in people with autism spectrum disorder in relation to the features and characteristics of their disability.
• Develop an understanding of the importance of using visual support strategies with people with autism spectrum disorder, particularly to address challenging behaviors.
INSTRUCTOR BIO: Susan L. Stokes, M.A., CCC-SLP has specialized in the area of autism spectrum disorder as both a speech/language pathologist and autism consultant for 25 years. She has presented at many state and national workshops/conferences, and frequently provides trainings related to all aspects of ASD to various groups across the country.
