Workshop Description: This half-day workshop will provide guidance for implementing Wisconsin’s revised SLD rule through the administrator’s perspective of leadership for school improvement. Using PowerPoint presentation, discussion, handouts, and case study activities, participants will be able to:

• Understand the essential components of the SLD rule.
• Guide staff in finding and evaluating research-based interventions and progress monitoring tools for applicability and efficacy.
• Distinguish the difference between Response to Intervention and what the SLD rule requires of schools.
• Implement the school wide notification requirement.
• Recognize administration’s role in monitoring fidelity.
• Understand the importance of collaboration in implementing the SLD rule and guide school staff in assuming their individual roles in the process.

Presenter: Peggy Rousch, DPI Educational Consultant, Special Education Tea

With over 20 years of experience in education, Peggy has spent her professional career in districts both large and small across the state and is now enjoying her position on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Special Education team. She is an experienced special education teacher, regular education teacher and school psychologist. Peggy has a long history of providing professional development opportunities for adult learners on a variety of education-related topics locally, state-wide and nationally. Peggy’s current professional interests revolve around increasing academic achievement for all students through technology applications in education, universal design for learning, response to intervention, and improved children’s mental health and well-being.
 

Target Audience: Special Education Directors and Coordinators, Pupil Service Administrators, Principals (It is essential that both special education administrators and building principals receive this information.)

This training is not designed for school implementation teams. Full day trainings will be offered beginning in the fall of 2012 for school-based teams comprised of classroom teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, school psychologists and other related school staff.

Administrator Standards
WAS1The administrator has an understanding of and demonstrates competence in the teacher standards under s. PI 34.02.
WAS2The administrator leads by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared by the school community.
WAS3The administrator manages by advocating, nurturing and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to pupil learning and staff professional growth.
WAS4The administrator ensures management of the organization, operations, finances, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.
WAS5The administrator models collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
Pupil Services
WPS1The pupil services professional understands the teacher standards under s. PI 34.02.
WPS3The pupil services professional has the ability to use research, research methods and knowledge about issues and trends to improve practice in schools and classrooms.
WPS5The pupil services professional understands the organization, development, management and content of collaborative and mutually supportive pupil services programs within educational settings.
WPS6The pupil services professional is able to address comprehensively the wide range of social, emotional, behavioral and physical issues and circumstances which may limit pupils’ abilities to achieve positive learning outcomes through development, implementation and evaluation of system-wide interventions and strategies.

Cancellation Policy:

Any registration cancellation must be received by the registration deadline date stated on the event for a refund to be issued. Persons registering and not in attendance on the day of the session will be charged the full registration fee (substitutions are accepted). CESA 12 reserves the right to cancel any session due to insufficient enrollment. Participants will be notified by email or phone if a cancellation occurs.
