Leap Into The Science of Reading Series - Jennifer Serravallo by Learning Services

Reading strategies offer children the essential "how to" to accomplish any goal or skill: from engaging with their reading, to decoding and blending to read words accurately, to reading fluently, to understanding what they read. Reading strategies make teaching more explicit, and support independence, and they belong in every classroom, no matter your curriculum or your approach to literacy instruction. In this series, Jennifer Serravallo will review the broad and deep research-based strategy instruction, what makes an effective strategy, and how to use goals and skill progressions to identify the right strategy at the right time--whether planning (or supplementing) curriculum or making decisions for differentiated instruction.

September 26th Virtual Keynote speaker: Jennifer Serravallo, author of The Reading Strategies Book 2.0, The Writing Strategies Book, Understanding Texts, and Readers and more!

This series will continue throughout the year with 1 hour after school virtual opporunities facilitated by Literacy Specialists Charla Meyer and Sarkis Wentland to explore the many strands of the top half of Scarborough's Reading Rope, Language Comprehension!

The Language Comprehension portion of the reading rope goes beyond the skills students need to decode written text.  These skills are much more complex and involve the ways in which students make meaning out of what they read.  Strategies in these sessions would benefit teachers of literacy at all levels, not just the primary.

Target Audience:

  • K-12 teachers
  • Administrators

***We recommend involoving your ELA Team to plan the systematic Implementation of the Science of Reading Research into Action.
