2023-24 CESA 8 Math Network Meetings
6-12 Strand
Have you ever felt that there must be a better way than the prescriptive special-ed approach to teaching mathematics to students living with disabilities? During our book study, we will consider how the authors of Humanizing Disability in Mathematics Education: Forging New Paths not only challenge the prevailing stereotypes of learners with disabilities but also set out a philosophy and methodology to change the underlying attitudes towards disability and those who live with one. As one of the authors states, “By humanizing we mean treating disabled students with dignity in their inherent capacities to think and do mathematics.”
Sample Meeting Topics and Activities:
- Book Study: Humanizing Disability in Mathematics Education: Forging New Paths
- Special Education
- Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Local, state, and national initiatives
- Invited guest speakers
