CESA 9 developed the Substitute Teacher Training in response to a Legislative Bill which permits the temporary teacher certification of individuals with an Associate's or Bachelor’s Degree in areas other than education. Our training, held at CESA 9 in Tomahawk, is designed to prepare prospective substitute teachers with

in-depth information about the substitute’s role. Participants who complete the training and practice will receive a certificate of completion. During the workshop, participants will be guided through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) application process for the Substitute Teacher License.

Benefits of our training:

  • Ability to identify and understand the professional responsibilities and roles of a substitute teacher.
  • Ability to identify and demonstrate successful classroom organization, management, and behavioral strategies.
  • Understand the importance of student safety.
  • Able to prepare and conduct a lesson.
  • Understand the legal responsibilities of a substitute teacher.
  • Ability to use and demonstrate appropriate communication protocols and procedures during the school day.

Please be sure to have the following when you attend:

  • Laptop and power cord
  • Access to your email (login and password)
  • Copies of college transcripts (Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree) to upload with your license application (these must include your name; contain the name and address of the college or university; list the course names, grade, and number of credits earned; display the term when the credits were earned; and include the degree issued and the conferred date)
  • Credit card (DPI only accepts Mastercard, Visa, or Discover) to pay the $125 DPI Substitute Teacher License processing fee

TIME: 8:30 am-3:30 pm

Cost for the 1-day workshop: $150.00 (this includes lunch & materials). PLEASE NOTE: There is a separate $125 DPI fee when you apply for the Substitute Teacher License at the end of training (please bring a credit card for this).
