This 4-part series provides teachers in grades 5-12 an understanding of academic and disciplinary literacy through the study of evidence-aligned strategies that support deeper learning of core content within the disciplines. The information presented will be grounded in the science of reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction, with participants walking away with many tools and strategies to apply within many levels of an RtI system.

Participants will receive a copy of the book Thinking Reading: What Every Secondary Teacher Needs to Know about Reading by James and Dianne Murphy. 

Series Goal: Provide teachers with evidence-aligned tools, techniques, and routines that will engage a wide range of students to actively learn and build academic literacy in all content areas for a wide range of learning needs.

Target 1: The Science of Reading and Writing Applied to the Adolescent Learner

  • Understand the Progression of Academic literacy skills and what to emphasize across the content areas.

Target 2: Reading, Writing, and Vocabulary: Connections to Disciplinary Literacy

  • Make the Learning Stick: How to use academic and disciplinary literacy to foster the deep content knowledge necessary for advanced learning and application.

Target 3: MLSS at the Secondary Level

  • Understand the options for an MLSS system at the secondary level.

Audience: ELA, Science, Social Studies, and Math teachers in grades 5-12. Special education teachers, reading interventionists, and literacy coaches. Ideal to attend as a school team.
