WORKSHOP FORMAT:

  • Introduction to the pandemic flu planning process and the resources.
  • Work on pandemic flu plans utilizing planning template provided at the training. This is a very hands-on session, so please bring YOUR CURRENT CRISIS PLAN AND A COMPUTER to work on the action plan template.
  • Please remember to invite community/county public health or emergency response team members that will have a role in your response plan.

WORKSHOP OUTCOMES:

  • Understand the pandemic influenza planning process and the available resources.
  • Identify roles of schools, health departments and emergency management.
  • Review of State-developed action plan template.
  • Develop or enhance their school district’s pandemic influenza plan.

WHY SCHOOL DISTRICTS NEED A PANDEMIC FLU PLAN:
The Swine Flu Epidemic was a good reminder of why county and district coordination is essential for this issue. Leading health authorities tell us that it is not a matter of if a pandemic will strike, but rather when. If the virus should mutate and become a greater health risk, it is possible that the health department would close schools for up to 12 weeks. Even if this doesn’t happen, there are lots of other “variations” on this theme that the districts will want to be thoughtful about as well as have some contingency plans.
