AM: Participants will gain strategies to integrate language and executive function skills - one cannot develop without the other. Educators will learn how to facilitate the development of executive function skills. Being able to plan, organize, inhibit responses, follow multi-step directions, stay focused, complete tasks amid distractions, be resilient, engage in non-preferred tasks, delay gratification, and be a flexible thinker are skills that set young learners up for success in school and in life. ---Research shows an emphasis on executive function is critical for optimal growth and development.
PM: Making Sense of Sensory: Creating a sensory room often checks the box for providing sensory, but educators desire more confidence and competence as it relates to understanding that sensory input drives motor and behavioral output. Participants will learn strategies that help young learners take in, process, and respond to sensory information to positively impact learning, development, and behavior.
Participants will:
1. Contrast how sensory over-responsivity, sensory under-responsivity, and sensory-seeking behaviors affect attention, participation, and behavior in young language learners.
2. List the sensory systems and describe the relevance of the three power senses.
3. Summarize how to create sensory-rich learning opportunities to support young children with sensory differences who struggle participating in therapy and classroom activities.
Participants can attend 1/23 Evening for no additional cost: The Power of Play in a High-Tech World from 6 pm to 8 pm.
