2022-2023
4K Literacy Collaborative: Emergent Storybook Reading Pathway

Leveraging purposeful and playful literacy learning within the 4K classroom

The 4K Literacy Collaborative has been developed as a way to bring 4K teachers from across districts together to engage in deep learning about ways to leverage purposeful and playful literacy learning within the 4K classroom.

Each year, the 4K Literacy Collaborative will center on one or more high-leverage practice(s) that can be incorporated within the 4K classroom. These practices are rooted in brain research that supports the science of reading with our youngest learners.

Emergent Storybook Reading Pathway

Based on the work of Elizabeth Sulzby, Emergent Storybook Reading involves immersing students in the repeated reading of rich storybooks, which are purposefully selected based on a clear set of criteria.  The Emergent Storybook Reading framework provides a predictable and purposeful structure for supporting students’ language development, speaking and listening skills, understanding of concepts of print, comprehension skills, and understanding of the genre of narrative texts.  If you are looking for a way to build one of the key elements in future reading comprehension:  listening comprehension -- all in a joyful, authentic, and playful manner, then this pathway is for you!

Throughout our year together, you will be supported in developing a deep understanding of Emergent Storybook Reading, its purpose, and how it may be incorporated within your 4K program (half-day or full-day).  You will also have the opportunity to engage in supported planning time so that you can take what you learn and have actionable plans to bring back to your classroom.  Finally, throughout the year you will be introduced to a rich array of texts that can be used to support the instructional context of Emergent Storybook Reading within your classroom.

Key connections to the sciences of reading:  oral language development/listening comprehension

“Emergent Storybook Reading has strengthened our teachers' understanding of what reading looks like for their students. The retelling of the emergent storybooks by our students is building confidence, positive reading identities, and is a powerful step before reading the words.”
~ Neenah Joint School District

“4K students bring books to life with emergent storybook lessons that allow them to participate and interact with the texts building their confidence as readers.”
~United School District of Antigo
