This course provides an overview of the nature of disabilities and special education services. The content of the course will primarily focus on the practice of special education as defined by Federal law IDEA and Wisconsin law Chapter 115, beginning with the history of disabilities in the United States. The course is organized into units of instruction with assigned readings, written assignments, discussions, and practice sessions based on the Teacher Candidate Cross Categorical emphasis area (SLD, EBD, ID).
This 25 hours course provides the basics and foundations of Special Education services including specific disability identification criteria for Cross Categorical emphasis areas (SLD, EBD, ID) and culminates with a final student with (EBD, or SLD or ID) dependent on Teacher Candidate license emphasis assessment project with the focus/emphasis (SLD, EBD, ID) on the teacher candidate’s area of Cross Categorical license and other artifacts that may be utilized in a teacher portfolio.
