Intercultural Competence: A Pathway to Belonging

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Facilitators: Kim Walters

                     Jae Henderson

Culturally competent teachers understand that the classroom cultures they create inevitably reflect their own home culture.   A culturally competent teacher understands the important differences in subjective culture and creates a space so that students from a variety of backgrounds may experience a sense of belonging.

We need to communicate to every student, “I see you and I welcome you as you are.” I can only see you if I see all of you. Our commitment to cultural competency starts here.

Culturally competent teachers know that treating everyone fairly does not always mean treating them the same.  This will be an interactive workshop that offers engaging dialogue opportunities and reflective journaling.

Note:  One additional hour of time is required for each participant to receive their one-on-one confidential results from the Intercultural Development Inventory and their customized plan to grow their intercultural competence.

Participants will be able to:

  • Deepen your own cultural self-awareness

  • Learn how and why belonging matters in closing the achievement gap

  • Recognize cultural expressions in behavior

  • Engage with the Intercultural Development Inventory and receive your results: sample Individual Profile Report

  • Receive a customized plan to grow your intercultural competence: sample Intercultural Development Plan

Who Should Attend:

Any educator who wishes to increase their own cultural competency to improve the sense of belonging for their students.

COST: $350/person
