School Crisis Screening and Safety Planning Training

With the continued shortage of crisis call center workers and increasing mental health challenges, school districts have been asked to be more involved in the screening and safety planning process during crisis situations. These situations can be stressful, and many professionals have reported not having the training necessary to feel competent. This training is not intended to replace the role of crisis workers who still hold responsibility in assisting with crisis support and authorizing emergency detentions. This training is intended for school counselors, school psychologists, and any other leader who finds themselves involved in the assessment for risk when a student makes a statement about harm-to-self or harm-to-others.

In this half-day training we will cover the epidemiology of suicide and youth violence, risk and protective factors, how to complete a risk assessment, outcome and implantation planning with focus on family-centered safety planning, documentation, rights of minors/Chapter 51, and professional self-care. Participants will engage in role-play situations to practice assessment and safety planning conversations. Lunch will be provided.

This training will be taught by Sara Bowe, Licensed Professional Counselor and Mental Health Consultant with CESA 10. Sara has experience as a crisis call center worker for Northwest Connections where she answered crisis calls for 27 counties. She also worked as a mobile crisis worker for Eau Claire County completing in-person crisis assessments.

Cost: No charge to Special Education Professional Development member districts; $50 to all others.
