Explore leadership practices for effective family engagement

Presenter: Julie Preman, Carlene Chavez

Price: Free

Description:

The RSN and WSPEI are collaborating to provide special education directors in the CESAs an overview of family engagement concepts from Steven Constantino's book, Engage Every Family. The overview is meant to provide an awareness of ideas and strategies that engage families meaningfully and effectively.

The purpose of this virtual session is to build awareness of the information and resources available in the book Engage Every Family. Participants will engage in case studies, learn best practices for engaging families, obtain resources, and have opportunities for group discussions and reflection.

The Five Principles are:

  • A culture that engages every family
  • Communicate effectively and develop relationships
  • Build family efficacy
  • Engage every family in decision making
  • Engage the greater community

Carlene Chavez is a Family Engagement Coordinator for CESA 2. Her work is part of the Wisconsin Statewide Parent-Educator Initiative (WSPEI), a DPI statewide discretionary grant. Carlene works to create partnerships between parents and educators for students with disabilities that lead to better educational outcomes. She believes deeply that families need other families, so she encourages and helps cultivate networking opportunities. She encourages districts to apply the equity practices they are implementing in schools to the work with their families.
