Cultural Self-Awareness

March 2, 2022

8:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Facilitators: Kim Walters and Demetri Beekman

All experts agree that the first step in becoming more equitable and inclusive is to have a solid understanding of your own culture. Why is it important to learn about your own culture? Because in order to understand cultures that are different from your own, you must be able to identify the elements of your own culture that appear unique to another person’s perspective. This interactive workshop will guide participants to reflect, explore, and develop their understanding of their own cultural self-awareness.  Participants will gain an understanding of how they are “showing up” in the classroom and how that plays a role in student achievement.

Participants will be able to:

  • Be able to define common vocabulary: diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and culture

  • Understand how the dominant culture sends a message of exclusion

  • Understand how being inclusive increases student and staff feelings of belonging which results in higher staff retention and engagement and higher student achievement

  • Explore resources to continue on their journey of cultural competence

Who Should Attend:

People who are in the beginning stages of their equity journey will benefit from this interactive workshop. Becoming more culturally self-aware is the first step on the journey of cultural competence.   If you struggle to answer the question, “Tell me about your culture,” then this workshop is for you.

COST: $125/person
