During this workshop, Naomi Moes-Jenkins will teach art educators how to use a metal armature, paper mache, epoxy-type clay, and acrylic paint to create a mixed media sculpture. Naomi will discuss reasons and possible materials for creating armatures as well as the process of building up around a 3D form to create a sculpture. Incorporating inspirational verses to personalize and add meaning to the artwork will be demonstrated. She will also discuss different sculptural materials that can be easily used for all children.
Naomi Moes–Jenkins is a sculpture artist who primarily works in metal, fiberglass, and epoxy clay. Her work is typically figurative work which includes elements of fantasy. She has now evolved into the world of bronze casting and works between the two mediums. Not only has she won national awards, but she has been a presence in the local arts community for over 15 years. She has done many public art projects, some with Artist in Residencies, and others as direct commissions. Her work is enjoyed by many clients across the country.

Wisconsin Art & Design Standards Connection:
AA 1: CREATE—Teachers will be exposed to 3D sculptural media in order to assist students in generating, developing, and refining artistic work. By attending this hands-on workshop, teachers will see how a professional artist utilizes materials in order to convey to students how to utilize more complex media, to express an idea, and expand knowledge of tools and techniques, with attention to craftsmanship. They will have an opportunity to network with other teachers to have meaningful discussions about sculptural methods they incorporate into their curriculum.
AA 2: PRESENT—This workshop will demonstrate how teachers can assist students to develop, refine, and convey meaning through the production and presentation of artistic work by learning more about contemporary artists. Discussions about artist statements, advertising, and promoting your artwork will be a focus of conversations.
AA 3: RESPOND—Teachers who attend this workshop will be able to model to students how to critically interpret intent and meaning in order to evaluate artistic work after working with a professional artist. More meaningful discussions of how an artist can convey mood and intent are possible as well as discussions of how to integrate meaning in student work.
AA 4: CONNECT—Art teachers will be able to reflect on the process of the art activity and will relate their experience to students to discuss artistic work with prior experience and external context. Discussions of how social and cultural influences have on the process of creating public and personal art after viewing images of Naomi Moes-Jenkins artwork will be validated.
