Teaching Phonics & Word Study in the Intermediate Grades
Audience: Grades 3 and Up - Educators and Instructional Leaders
Phonics and word study isn’t just for our youngest learners. This session is designed to support educators as they continue phonics and word study instruction beyond the early years. Blevins will highlight supportive instructional practices that can benefit all students -- and specifically support our students who need to solidify their reading foundational skills. Participants will learn how advanced phonics builds on the skills taught in the primary grades - with emphasis on multisyllabic words, complex syllabication patterns, and vocabulary.
Wiley Blevins taught elementary school in both the United States and South America and completed his graduate work in education at Harvard University. He is an author of 16 books for teachers including A Fresh Look at Phonics, Phonics from A to Z, Meaningful Phonics and Word Study, and Choosing and Using Decodable Texts. He regularly works with teachers and reading coaches throughout the U.S. and Asia. He is also a writer of children's books, including Trevor Lee and the Big Uh-Oh!
