UDL and DI are powerful practices that interface with rigor and intentionality. UDL is based on the science that no two students are alike. Teachers have the responsibility to teach to all students. So how do we best bridge these two realities?
In this Professional Development opportunity you will learn how to develop lessons using the principles of universal design, an approach to learning, which encompasses engagement, representation, and expression. Additionally, you will engage in differentiated instruction, a strategy to ensure that all students have access to rigorous instruction and addresses learner variability.
For English learners, appropriate instruction and interventions need to be linguistically and culturally responsive. The rigorous and relevant instruction considers and builds on a student’s cultural background and experiences as well as linguistic proficiency (in both English and native language). The issue of language proficiency and culture also extends to any student who may not be proficient in standard academic language.
Utilizing UDL and DI can provide the horizontal and vertical stretch necessary to meet the needs of every student, meet the intended learning targets, and rectify the equity challenges that the pandemic has created.
