10 Reasons Phonics Instruction Sometimes Fails
Audience: K-2 educators and instructional leaders
Participants will examine the role of phonics as it aligns to the science of reading. They will also explore the 7 characteristics of strong phonics instruction and the 10 common causes of phonics instructional failure. Blevins will highlight instructional tools and classroom practices to identify the mismatches and areas of weakness that impede or slow learning for our students. Additionally, he will emphasize strategies to maximize instructional success.
Wiley Blevins taught elementary school in both the United States and South America and completed his graduate work in education at Harvard University. He is an author of 16 books for teachers including A Fresh Look at Phonics, Phonics from A to Z, Meaningful Phonics and Word Study, and Choosing and Using Decodable Texts. He regularly works with teachers and reading coaches throughout the U.S. and Asia. He is also a writer of children's books, including Trevor Lee and the Big Uh-Oh!
