“Counting is fundamental to learning mathematics in elementary school. It supports the development of a deep understanding of number, providing the core foundation for understanding place value, how numbers are composed and decomposed, and how they are related to one another. It is an intricate process requiring the coordination of much skill and knowledge developed over time. Choral counting supports students to count together as the teacher records the number sequence in a specific manner.”” Choral Counting and Counting Collections by Megan L. Frank, Elham Kazemi, and Angela Chan Turrou

We will discuss the importance of counting (collections and choral) through grade 5 and how to create collections and counts that will challenge the upper grades.

As this is a series that is being presented virtually, we will be meeting over a 6 week period with each session being 1 hour and 15 minutes. We will be utilizing breakout rooms so participants can collaborate in small groups, work through different collections and different forms of recording their counting. Materials will be sent to participants once registration is completed.

Participants in this series will be learning:

  • counting collections and choral counting build students’ number sense and instill a deeper understanding of numbers
  • to create counting collections

  • how students examine number relationships that enable them to identify, to discuss, and to use patterns and the structure of the number system, to further their understanding of mathematics

  • to create/design recording sheets to meet the goals of lessons being taught

  • to record the same choral count differently in order to meet different goals for different math lessons

  • to fit counting collections and choral counting into their math program

  • to use the data gathered from collection and counting work to drive instruction and interventions

The series will take place over a 6 week period with each session lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Cost: $280 for school improvement services members, $425 for non-members
