Let's Take it Outside and do some STEM in the outdoors! NGSS and the NEW Wisconsin Science Standards emphasize doing science investigations and developing explanations over learning disconencted facts and theories. Citizen Science is a practical and fun way to achieve this goal. Students can collect data in your school and community and contribute to ongoing research, or create investigations of their own. We will explore data apps that allow students at any grade to log their observations and even identify unknown organisms using "facial" recognition. This session will take an integrated approach as well, looking at how this approach can bring in math, art, social studies, physical education and career education. We will have plenty of time for exploring and planning so you return to your classroom ready to Take it Outside!
Learning outcomes include:
- Understand the instructional shifts called for in the new Wisconsin Standards.
- Discover citizen science efforts and data apps appropriate for your grade level, PK-12.
- Explore how to best implement citizen science into your students' learning.
- Connect citizen science activities with Wisconsin Science Standards at your grade level.
