Co-serving is the practice of pairing teachers together in a classroom to share the responsibilities of planning, instructing, and assessing students. In a co-serving setting, the teachers are considered equally responsible and accountable for serving the needs of their students in the classroom. As you may have guessed, having two teachers leading a classroom opens up many opportunities for students as well as teachers.
This workshop is being offered for teams to develop the building blocks necessary to provide comprehensive cohesive services to deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind students. This can be especially challenging due to the variety of instructional models.

Session Descriptions:
Oct. 30, 2020 - An Introduction to Inclusion and Co-Serving
To create an inclusive classroom, we begin with the specialists that serve this population. We will collaborate on the development of our vision for serving our students in an inclusive classroom environment. This begins with our core group of Deaf Education Professionals. The inclusive classroom allows for co-serving that all students can benefit from. It is important to understand what co-serving is and what co-serving is not. Participants will be introduced to what history, the law and research states about co-serving. Participants will create a shared vision for co-serving in their classroom and district through a cooperative process. The goal of this session is to empower co-serving partners and to build an understanding of what co-serving looks like.
Dec. 11, 2020 - Approaches to Co-Planning
In this situation, co-planning involves two or more Deaf Education Professionals sharing the responsibility for planning services for a specific student. Participants will explore the 6 approaches to co-serving:
- One teach, one observe
- One teach, one assist
- Parallel teaching
- Station Teaching
- Alternative Teaching
- Team Teaching
These approaches will allow us to better understand the concept of co-serving in the general education classroom and serve our students in a cohesive manner.
Jan. 29, 2021 - Roles and Responsibilities
This session will focus on the importance of Deaf Education Professionals as co-servers and being a team. Being able to communicate, build interpersonal relationships and conflict management are important for co-serving teams to develop together. Participants will focus on 5 variables for bringing about change and developing a co-serving partnership: vision, skills, incentives, resources, and action planning.
Mar. 5, 2021 - Co-Planning
Deaf Education Professionals rarely have an opportunity to co-plan with each other to coordinate services and support each other in our work to better achieve our student goals and outcomes. We will attempt to bring our work together and break down our silos of expertise to develop cohesive programming. Without co-planning, services/IEP goals often remain unmet or unchanged. Co-planning allows Deaf Education Professionals to effectively implement teaching practices that support IEP goals that support learners and enable students to succeed.
April 16, 2021 - Courageous Conversations
What does true collaboration look like between Deaf Education Professionals that lends legitimacy to their expertise in the field of Deaf Education and how that supports students within the general education classroom? This session will provide techniques to engage in courageous conversations with each other, in order to develop as a team of professionals serving our students who are deaf/hard of hearing/deafblind through our collaborative efforts. We will discuss how to self-advocate for your role in the district, classroom, and IEP’s We will learn to have courageous conversations in order to break down our silos of services and increase student outcomes and ensure Deaf Education Professionals are part of the school community.
May 28, 2021 - From Surviving to Thriving
There are four stages in the developmental relationship of co-servers; the forming stage, the functioning stage, the formulation stage and the fermenting stage. Co-servers learn to navigate and collaborate through these stages. Participants will self-assess their co-serving practices and learn to celebrate and problem solve their way from surviving to thriving.
