Auditory Processing Disorders (APDs): Addressing Students’ Needs As a Team

October 1, 2020  ~~  9:00 am - 3:15 pm

Virtual Workshop  ~~  Workshop link and materials will be emailed to registered participants

Assessing and treating auditory processing disorders may be complex but it need not be complicated. By understanding the neuroscientific foundations of auditory processing and the continuum of skills encompassed by that term, we can develop assessment tools that clarify the nature of the academic, communicative, and social-emotional challenges observed among school-age learners. Knowing “what’s driving the bus” informs our intervention process, enabling the educational team to develop effective plans of remediation and accommodations that reduce or resolve specific deficiencies, minimize the impact of impaired processing in the learner’s life, and maximize school-based resources.

Learning Outcomes: After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • describe continuum and development of auditory processing skills.
  • describe referral criteria and screening for AP assessments.
  • describe assessment techniques that probe skills along the processing continuum.
  • describe behavioral characteristics and educational impact of various auditory processing deficits.
  • describe effective intervention strategies for use at home and school.
