In this session, Jessica Martin, author of Strategic Classroom Design - Creating an Environment For Flexible Learning, invites you to participate in the reimagining of teaching and learning in virtual, physical, and intellectual spaces that nurture a child’s curiosity with texts and the natural world. We’ll take a look at a variety of strategic small group structures and study ways to co-author clear routines and rituals that promote choice, decision-making, collaboration, and deepen critical thinking skills. Additionally, we'll discuss ways to incorporate some basic elements of design that research says makes a significant impact on our social and emotional well-being, resiliency, and productivity.

Making Responsive Teaching a Reality: Playful Explorations and Small Group Work

As we return to schools after an unprecedented time away, the question emerges: how do we make our classrooms ready for the diverse and demanding needs that are sure to greet us? This session will explore how we can use playful explorations to invite learners into rigorous and engaging learning while allowing the teacher to meet with small groups. In this session, we will discuss how playful explorations support social emotional development, build relationships, and engage children in rigorous academic content. In addition, we will discuss structures to support children with independence, and designing invitations that meet state standards. In addition, we will problem solve how to maintain progressive pedagogical practices when engaging in distance learning or socially distanced classrooms. Participants will receive a copy of the recording and materials to help continue this work in their classrooms.

Increasing Student Engagement Through Choice of Genre

Choice, in any area of learning, increases energy and engagement. Starting the year with highly engaged writers sets the tone for a year of writing. Teachers often grapple with choice of topic, but less frequently consider choice of genre. Yet, choice of genre significantly impacts engagement, especially for reluctant writers. In this webinar, we will make the case for including some opportunities for students to choose their genre each year, especially at the beginning. We will also troubleshoot common challenges of craft and process studies, including establishing a clear vision for learning, considering possible units, pulling stacks of texts, and conferring when children have choice.

Develop Meaningful Relationships with Student Writers by Conferring with Them

The relationships we develop with students in writing conferences aren’t the happy byproduct of these conversations, but a central goal. That’s because children learn to write best when they have strong relationships with their teachers. With some children returning to classrooms after a long period away, and others continuing to learn online, it’s important that we make these relationships a priority next school year. This session will explore how conferences – in person or virtual – help us get to know students. To do this, we’ll discuss strategies for nudging students to talk to us about themselves as writers and individuals. We’ll talk about how to give feedback that helps students trust us. And we’ll also explore how teaching with mentor texts helps students feel part of a mentor-mentee relationship with us, and other writers.

Teaching the Close Reading of Nonfiction for Accuracy, Depth, and Citizenship

Students encounter a great deal of nonfiction text in their lives, both in school and as young people in the world. There is so much of it in fact, that it can be easy to let our minds glide over the text without paying as much attention as we are asked to - either by our teachers, our state, or our conscience. In this webinar, Kate will take you through a ritual for close reading developed by her and Christopher Lehman in their book Falling in Love with Close Reading, and will offer up ways that this repeated structure can help students become more powerful, critical readers of informational texts.

Help Young Readers Grow Big Ideas In the Littlest Books...and Anything They Choose to Read

As children learn to decode text and focus on reading with accuracy, we teachers often angle our reading conferences and small groups toward print strategy instruction. While this is certainly necessary, it's also important that we strike an instructional balance with our young readers so they read with accuracy, fluency, AND comprehension, as well as a disposition to think about and respond to texts in their own idiosyncratic and developmentally appropriate ways. In this webinar, Kathy Collins will share research and practical ideas for how to help our youngest readers develop big ideas, even in the littlest books. She will share classroom examples of children doing exactly that. Participants will learn how to confer in ways that support young children's deep comprehension, while encouraging them to talk with detail, clarity and elaboration and their books, from the texts at the earliest levels to any other book they choose to read. As a bonus, teachers will see how we, too, can value the comprehension possibilities and response opportunities in the earliest level books and anything else!
