CESA 5's Project TILT III and McREL present a series of webinars on Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works. Each of the webinars will focus on one component of Classroom Instruction that Works (CITW) and the iOS apps that help them to implement the strategies in that component.
The goals of the sessions are:
1. To help participants have a basic understanding of the strategies behind Classroom Instruction that Works.
2. To help participants use a variety of iPad and iPod Touch apps to help them integrate the strategies into instruction.
iPads have the potential to change classrooms into dynamic, differentiated, and engaging learning environments—if teachers understand how to use them with research-based instructional strategies. This workshop helps participants understand the research behind the nine categories of instructional strategies that most impact student learning identified in Classroom Instruction that Works (ASCD, 2001). Then, participants will learn how using apps from Apple's iTunes store within the context of these strategies makes best use of exciting technologies while ensuring sound pedagogy.
September 19: Developing Understanding
The CITW strategies in this section help students access their prior knowledge and make connections to new knowledge. These strategies present opportunities for teachers to differentiate instruction and provide multiple venues for sense-making and skill building.
The strategies included in this section are:
• Cues, Questions, and Advance Organizers
• Nonlinguistic Representations
• Summarizing and Note Taking
• Homework and Practice
Note: Participants' iPads should be synced with their iTunes accounts prior to the workshop. While many of the apps that will be demonstrated are free, some paid apps (amounting to about $100) will also be demonstrated. Purchasing these apps is entirely optional.
This webinar will be held online over GoToWebinar. Use of headphones is recommended. A link to the webinar will be emailed out to participants on Monday morning, September 19th.
