Stephanie Harvey

December 10 - 11, 2019

Join us for just one, or both days in December to learn from Stephanie!

DAY 1:  Tuesday, December 10, 2019  From Striving to Thriving - How to Grow Confident, Capable Readers (Gr. 2-8)

When it comes to readers who need the most support, teachers can't afford to waste time using fragmented, skill-and-drill interventions that don't work. Literacy specialist Stephanie Harvey will demonstrate how to “table the labels” and build in time for students to read independently and provide personalized instruction that enable striving readers to do what they need above all - to find books they love and engage in voluminous reading. Loaded with ready-to-go lessons, routines, and “actions,” as well as the latest research, this workshop is a must for any teacher who strives to make every reader a thriving reader.

DAY 2:  Wednesday, December 11, 2019 Inquiry Illuminated - Researcher's Workshop Across the Curriculum (Gr. K-6)

To immerse students in the richness and intrigue of the content areas, let the kids lead the way!  Stephanie Harvey will shine a light on researcher’s workshop—an approach whose true north emerges from kids’ curiosity. Adapting structures you already know from Reader’s and Writer’s workshop, she will share a predictable, proven, and—most importantly—authentic approach that creates irresistible investigations in science, history and social studies, or language arts; increases students’ independence and agency by gradually releasing responsibility for inquiry; and, effectively integrates literacy and content through strategies for comprehension and critical thinking.

Through student examples and classroom video, Stephanie will show us how to create a culture where thoughtfulness, creativity, and collaboration can turn wonder into powerful inquiry.  You’ll uncover a process that transforms curiosity into opportunities to ask questions and follow a path to new understandings. Further, you will discover how to bring in what you already do in Reader’s and Writer’s workshop to support students’ investigations as they read, write, create, and take action.

TEN TIPS with STEPHANIE HARVEY: Content literacy and the importance of reading, writing, and thinking
across the curriculum and across the school year.
