About the Presenter:

Fred Williams, Senior Program Consultant - New Teacher Center: For about seventeen years I served as a high school social studies teacher in Durham Public Schools. Then, I began an administrative path and served as a high school principal for four years and then transitioned to Human Resources and served as Executive Director of HR in Durham Public Schools for about seven years. While in HR, I became very interested in the development and retention of beginning teachers and advocated for our district to partner with the New Teacher Center to create a full-time mentor program to serve the 700+ initially licensed teachers in the district. That partnership was joyous and had immediate and consistent impact. Beginning teacher retention increased from about 72% to the 90%+ level each year and, more importantly, the achievement of students taught by beginning teachers matched and often surpassed that of veteran and tenured colleagues.
