Presenter: Mary S. Gerbig, Attorney 

Description: This networking series will focus on equity in education, particularly in the areas of culture and bilingualism, communication and record keeping, and social-emotional development and trauma sensitivity. Attendees will receive ethics training and large group discussion in morning sessions followed by job-alike breakout sessions in the afternoon. Certificate of Ethics attendance will be provided (may be used towards ASHA recertification).

Participants will be able to:

  • Obtain legal updates for the state of Wisconsin/US in special education and related areas
  • Understand and describe the impact Title II/III particularly in relation to students who are EL and how this impacts FAPE and CCR-IEPs
  • Understand and identify linguistic diversity vs. language delay
  • Understand the implications and develop practices around pupil records (including e-records), data collection, and determining disability related need (DRN) when providing FAPE and when writing, attending, and updating IEPs
  • Understand/develop practices for timelines for evaluations and correlations to 504/MLSS/SLD
  • Evaluate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) standards as they relate to DRN and practice goal writing in these areas
  • Understand and develop practices for trauma-sensitive responses to students

About the Presenter:

Mary S. Gerbig serves as counsel to numerous school districts throughout Wisconsin on general school law, special education, and labor and employment matters. The primary client base she serves includes school districts, Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA) and other municipal employers. She has extensive experience with Wisconsin school districts and the correlating regulatory agencies. She has represented school districts in numerous student special education and discrimination hearings and mediations under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

 


Cancellation Policy: Registered participants will receive a refund if they cancel prior to 3 working days before an event, minus any material costs that have already been incurred. Cancellations must either be made on MyQuickReg or by emailing cancel@cesa2.org. Because of our commitment to the presenter and the food vendor, participants who cancel less than 3 working days prior to the event or who do not attend the event, will be billed the full fee. CESA 2 reserves the right to cancel any event. Registered participants will be notified via phone and email if a cancellation occurs and will receive a full refund. 

Inclement Weather Policy: Every effort will be made to hold an event. CESA 2 will notify participants via email as soon as possible if an event has been cancelled due to weather conditions.

In-Person Events: Restrictions on our in-person events due to COVID-19 have been lifted. We will be responsive to what's happening within our communities, and guidelines from the CDC and local health agencies for future offerings and will update guidelines when necessary.
