Overview
Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is about teachers making instructional decisions based on their knowledge of individual children’s thinking. This extensively researched approach is recognized nationally as an effective professional development model. Cognitively Guided Instruction for Mathematics has been shown to be highly successful for developing number sense with mainstream as well as minority children and children with disabilities. It helps teachers learn about the relation between the structure of primary level mathematics and children's thinking of that mathematics. The goal of this approach is that teachers will be able to understand how their children learn mathematics concepts and that this knowledge will inform their type and style of instruction. This method can be used along side of any other mathematics curriculum already in place.
