About the Presenter:

Fred Williams served as a high school social studies teacher in Durham Public Schools for seventeen years. Then he began an administrative path and served as a high school principal for four years and then transitioned to Human Resources and served as Executive Director of HR in Durham Public Schools for seven years. While in HR he became very interested in the development and retention of beginning teachers and advocated for our district to partner with the New Teacher Center to create a full-time mentor program to serve the 700+ initially licensed teachers in the district. That partnership was joyous and had immediate and consistent impact. Beginning teacher retention increased from about 72% to the 90%+ level each year and, more importantly, the achievement of students taught by beginning teachers matched and often surpassed that of veteran and tenured colleagues. Another powerful benefit he found in the work is that the veteran educators who served as full-time mentors found an alternate path to express teacher leadership. In 2010, he left Durham Public Schools and began service as a Senior Program Consultant with NTC. With NTC he has now worked in over thirty states and continues to marvel at the talent he sees in the mentors and new teachers he serves and supports.
