The WI Common Core State Standards require that by the end of grade 3, students will “know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.” Rather than just expecting students to memorize the facts using songs, rhymes, and fingers, how do we get students to conceptually understand the operation of multiplication and the varied strategies they can use to fluently know the facts?

This hands-on workshop will:

  • Focus on instruction that builds foundational understanding of multiplication and division.
  • Explore the progression of developing understanding to move students from additive to multiplicative thinking.
  • Experience instructional tasks/activities that will help students build multiplication sense so that students can multiply larger numbers not only using algorithms, but also mentally.
  • Explore the development of the distributive property, partial products, and the area model.
  • Explore a wide variety of tools that will build understanding of multiplication from the concrete to the representational to the abstract levels.

Cost: $100.00/person (includes session, materials, and lunch)
Audience: Classroom teachers 3-5, math interventionists, Title I Math, special education teachers
