“Research into the importance of early math skills shows that children who are taught math early and learn the basics at a young age are set up for a lifetime of achievement in all aspects of their academic performance.” – Greg Duncan, PhD.

Come deepen your understanding of early childhood mathematics.   Sessions feature activities you can use the next day with your students and are grounded in developmental learning trajectories for early childhood mathematics. Each session will be presented in an engaging, interactive format, with Tina Lemmens, CESA 7 Math & Digital Learning Specialist and Nancy Misfeldt, CESA 7 Early Childhood Consultant as facilitators. Registration includes all three sessions.  See a description below for each session.

Session 1 COUNTING COLLECTIONS – Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Kids love to count things!  Counting collections is a great way to get kids excited about mathematics while honing and extending early counting principles.  By making counting explicit, hands-on, and fun, Counting collections provides a motivation for the mathematics of early place value understanding, skip counting, and addition.  We will engage in Counting collections, and explore the initial launch with children as well as variations to make the activity meaningful for all learners.  Each participant will leave with their own collection!

Session 2 THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUMBER SENSE PART 1 – Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Developing number sense in our youngest learners is critical to their future success in mathematics and is the most important work you can do with your young learners once counting skills are in place.  Through games and activities we will explore four number relationships that provide the foundation for number sense.  Come learn how to help support your young learners become flexible and confident mathematical thinkers.

Session 3 THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUMBER SENSE PART 2 – Friday, April 3, 2020, 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM

This session will be a continuation of number sense development began in Session 2.  We will dig deeper into four number relationships and children’s understanding of number and quantity, as well as, how to leverage four number relationships during instruction to support children’s mathematical understanding and growth.
