Working Together to Strengthen Family-School Partnerships

Dr. Karen Mapp Workshop Series, Scholastic - Scholastic has partnered with Dr. Karen Mapp to create a comprehensive family-school partnership training that supports educators in engaging families in meaningful partnerships focused on improving student achievement.  

Facilitated by:  Ron Mirr - Ron Mirr is an independent consultant who lives in Iowa City, Iowa. Most recently, Ron was the Senior Vice President at Scholastic Education where he led Scholastic’s consulting and professional services business for family and community engagement. Ron has worked as a social worker, a mental health clinician, a grant writer, a school administrator, a staff developer, a non-profit director, a lecturer/speaker, and an executive consultant. Since 1993 he has focused his efforts on helping educators build home-school partnerships that improve student achievement. Ron was the founder of the Iowa Parent Information Resource Center in 1995 and has been a consultant to programs in many different states and internationally on how to engage families in the learning process. He is a co-author of the Family Engagement Assessment—a tool that measures a school’s capacity for developing effective partnerships with families.

Centralized training opportunity in collaboration with CESA 2, 5, and 7

Dates and Locations:  The presenter will present in person at the designated CESA listed below. The presentation will then be live-streamed to either CESA 2, 5, or 7, per the schedule listed below, and registrants are to attend the sessions at either CESA 2, 5, or 7 that is closest to your region.

  • Session #1, Presenter attends on Oct. 21, 2019, at CESA 2 – 1221 Innovations Drive, Whitewater, WI (CESA 5 & 7 attend Live-Stream.)
  • Session #2, Presenter attends on Nov. 7, 2019, at CESA 5 – 626 E. Slifer St. Portage, WI (CESA 2 & 7 attend Live-Stream.)
  • Session #3, Presenter attends on Dec. 9, 2019, at CESA 7 – 595 Baeten Rd. Green Bay, WI (CESA 2 & 5 attend Live-Stream.)

Time:  9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Description:  A series of three full-day interactive workshops will equip your team with everything they need to implement a comprehensive family and community engagement plan.

  • Three training sessions led by expert family engagement practitioners
  • Participant guides and interactive activities
  • Hands-on strategies that can be implemented immediately
  • Yearlong action plan

Who Should Attend: To maximize the impact of the series, teams of five should participate in all three trainings.  Your team should include: 

  • Central office administrators
  • Principals
  • Teachers
  • Family and community representatives

Fee:  $199.00 per person; per session, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. Encompasses the following 2019-20 CESA members:

  • CESA 7 Learning Service
  • CESA 2 Title III Consortium
  • CESA 5 School Improvement Service

Non-Member Fee:  $239.00 per person; per session

SESSION 1/Oct. 21, 2019 – Reframing Family Engagement

Explore the research that supports the link between family engagement and improved student outcomes.

SESSION 2/Nov. 7, 2019 – Redesigning Family Engagement Events

Deepen your understanding of how to help families practice effective strategies to support children's learning at home.

SESSION 3/Dec. 9, 2019 – Engaging Families in Learning Through-out the Year

Learn how to design and implement family engagement events aligned with student learning goals.
