During the book study participants will discuss how using the right approach at the right time helps educators intentionally design classroom experiences that hit the surface, deep, and transfer phases of mathematics learning. This framework helps educators reach the level of rigor today’s students must meet through the combination of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application. The book study also examines the role of clear learning intentions and success criteria as the first stop to better learning, as well as the kinds of rich mathematical tasks and mathematical discourse central to each phase of learning.

Learning Outcomes:  Participants will….

  • Apply the principles of Visible Learning research to the mathematics classroom
  • Understand that there are three phases of learning and the unique importance of each: surface, deep, and transfer.
  • Learn which mathematics practices have the greatest impact on student growth in each phase (and which have the least) to maximize teaching time

Benefits of an Online Book Study…

  • collaborate with like-minded individuals in a Professional Learning Community to gain perspective on your practice
  • share ideas, resources, and learning materials
  • flexible learning times with asynchronous online collaboration and virtual meetings

Participants will be expected to...

  • come to virtual sessions prepared, having read the recommended text and watched recommended videos
  • participate in all asynchronous chats
  • complete course evaluation

Required Resources:

  • Schoology.com Account (Discussed during orientation meeting)
  • Visible Learning for Mathematics What Works Best to Optimize Student Learning Grades K-12  by John Hatie, Douglas Fischer, and Nancy Frey (Must be Purchased by Participant)
